- PaixGuild’s latest game Tsumooo! is a fresh take on trick-taking, where you “draw” from a deck! [Self-interview]

—PaixGuild's new release is another trick-taking game, right? What kind of game is Tsumooo!?
Yes, it's inspired by the “tsumo” action in mahjong. Unlike traditional trick-taking games where you play with a fixed hand, in Tsumooo! your hand changes as you draw cards from decks created by other players during the game. One of the most unique aspects is that you also build a deck at the start for others to draw from.

—How did the idea for Tsumooo! come about?
The starting point was definitely the tsumo concept in mahjong. Typically, trick-taking games fix your hand at the beginning, but this one introduces a dynamic hand that evolves through the game. The fun lies in how you strategize under that uncontrollable element.

—Are there any other standout features?
Yes, this is our first time implementing a bidding system. At the beginning of the game, players declare how many tricks they plan to win, and then aim for that number exactly. Winning too much or too little will both cost you—so finding the right balance creates a nice tension.

—Did you reference any existing games?
Definitely. We looked at classic bidding trick-takers like Skull King, among others. Also, the bidding system used in Utsuke (a previous indie release) left a strong impression and influenced our design.
—What was the biggest challenge from concept to completion?
There are so many new trick-taking games released at Game Market every year, so it's getting harder to create something that feels fresh. We knew our core mechanics—building decks and drawing from them—were unique, but we still thoroughly researched existing titles to avoid overlap before moving into development.
—The artwork also feels very intentional.
Yes, at PaixGuild we often use neon-themed designs, and this time it feels like a culmination of that aesthetic. The theme is “Night Streets of Hong Kong.” As card numbers increase, the neon lights on the cards progressively light up, with the final card “10” completing the full illustration. We’re especially proud of this feature.

—Who would you recommend this game to?
Tsumooo! is one of our most approachable titles yet. Even players new to trick-taking games will be able to jump in without much confusion. Of course, seasoned fans will enjoy the fresh twist of drawing into your hand mid-game.

—What’s next after the Game Market 2025 Spring release?
We’re planning to offer it online through BOOTH. We’re also preparing to exhibit at “TOBE,” a board game convention in Taiwan this September.
—You’ve attended TOBE in Taiwan several times already, right?
Yes, this will be our third time. It all started as a combination of work and sightseeing, but the response has been great—our games have sold out each time. Many people are drawn in by the cute illustrations, so it’s rewarding to see the art being appreciated, too.
—What else is in store for the future?
We’re planning revised reprints of some of our earlier games: Fisherman, Angels and Demons, and Where Did My Socks Go? We’re incorporating feedback from players to improve both the gameplay and overall appeal.
—Finally, do you have a message for readers and players?
We’ll continue creating games that bring joy to as many people as possible. We appreciate your support! We’re especially looking forward to seeing everyone at Game Market.
